Aerobatics

Imagine pulling up into a loop, rolling around the sky, and other aerial acrobatics. Whether for pure enjoyment or to increase your skill and confidence level, Aerobatics Training is extremely rewarding.

Aerobatics training will be conducted using our 150 Hp, 1970 American Champion Citabria 7KCAB at the Collingwood Airport. This aircraft has full inverted fuel and oil systems to allow for maintained inverted flight up to 3 minutes.

Unfortunately we have had to remove this plane from service while it is being overhauled. We are hopeful that it will be back in service in a few months. Please feel free to contact us for an update on its availability.

Ground School

In addition to flight training, 5 hours of ground instruction at Collingwood covering:

  • Theory of Flight
  • Energy Management
  • Human Factors and Pilot Decision Making
  • Canadian Air Regulations, pertaining to Aerobatics
  • Aircraft Limitations

Flight Training

Future Air offers a 10 hour Aerobatics course, conducted at the Collingwood Airport, to allow pilots to perform basic Aerobatics with confidence and introduce competition Aerobatics flying. This 10 hour course will cover the following maneuvers:

PHASE I · approx 2 hrs

  • Precision Turns
  • Chandelles
  • Lazy Eight
  • Basic Loops

PHASE II · approx 3 hrs

  • Aileron Rolls
  • Barrel Rolls
  • Slow Rolls
  • Inverted Flight

PHASE III · approx 2 hrs

  • Cuban 8
  • Split "S"
  • Immelman
  • Reverse Cuban

PHASE IV · approx 3 hrs

  • Hammerhead Turn
  • Snap Roll
  • Combinations

Prior to Solo practice, students must successfully pass a proficiency check with the CFI.

If an Aerobatics student has no prior Tail Wheel experience, expect 2 to 4 hours of Dual flight time to become proficient on tail wheel flying.

All of this training can count towards an Aerobatics Instructor rating if desired.

The Canadian Air Regulations state that to conduct Aerobatics with a passenger, one of the following must be met:

  • Pilot must hold an aerobatic instructor rating.

OR

  • Have completed a 10 hour course and have their pilot logbook signed off.

OR

  • Have completed 20 hours of solo aerobatic practice and have completed 1 hour of either solo or dual practice in the last 6 months.

Note:

Cold weather temperature limits for Aerobatics will be more stringent than our company policy for regular training.

NO Aerobatics training will be conducted if the Outside Air Temperature (OAT) is below -15°C, to help prevent engine damage due to shock cooling. Also, a clear horizon and ceilings not lower than 5000' Above Ground Level (AGL) are required. Parachutes are not legally required, however they are recommended. The Collingwood Airport does not offer parachutes for rent. It is the student's responsibility to acquire this equipment if desired. All candidates for Aerobatics Training must possess at least a Recreational Pilot Permit and a CAT III medical. Solo Aerobatics may be approved at the discretion of the CFI.
