Night Rating

Flying at night can be very challenging, but also very rewarding. At Future Air's convenient Collingwood, Owen Sound, Midland, and Simcoe locations, we can teach you the skills you need to navigate in the air in the dark.

The night rating allows you to fly a single engine aircraft at night in Visual Flight Rules (VFR) conditions, meaning that you will navigate by visual references as dictated by VFR, with some assistance from your instruments.

To obtain a Night Rating you must be the holder of a Private Pilot License.

Ground School

There is no requirement for ground school and no written examination. You must be recommended by your flight instructor to hold the rating.

Flight Training

Training time on course is divided into Dual time (with an Instructor) and Solo time.

The minimum training time is 15 hours total flight time in the aircraft including:

Dual Training

  • 5 hours or night flying including 2 hours of night cross country flight.
  • 5 hours of instrument flying.

Solo Training

  • 5 hours of solo night flying including a minimum of 10 take offs and landings.

* At the completion of the course you must have a total of 10 hours dual of instrument time.

These are minimum training requirements as outlined by Transport Canada. Individuals may, in some cases, exceed these requirements before being recommended for this rating.
