Recreational Pilot's Permit

If you plan to fly just for the enjoyment of flying, then the Recreational Pilot Permit, offered at our convenient Collingwood, Owen Sound, Midland, and Simcoe locations, is right for you. This permit offers a low cost alternative to the private pilot's licensing requirements, and can be upgraded to a private pilot's license later on, with all of your flight hours counting toward the upgrade.

The Recreational Pilot Permit allows you to carry 1 passenger and fly up to a 4 seat aircraft in Canada, in the daytime under the Visual Flight Rules (VFR).

To obtain the permit you must be at least 16 years of age and complete the necessary flight training and written examination.

Ground School

Ground school is not a requirement for the Recreational Pilot Permit, but we recommend that all student pilots attend a ground school covering the following subjects:

  • Air Law
  • Theory of Flight
  • Meteorology
  • Navigation
  • Human Factors
  • Flight Operations

These courses will help students better understand what is required of a pilot and the rules that govern them.

The medical qualification required for the Recreational Pilot Permit is a Category 4 or higher medical. This Category 4 medical can be obtained through your family doctor. Declaration forms are available at Future Air.

Flight Training

Training time on course is divided into Dual time (with an Instructor) and Solo time. Solo time requires a student pilot permit and a valid medical certificate, available from your family doctor or a Transport Canada Aviation Medical Examiner.

The minimum training time is 25 hours total flight time in the aircraft including:

Dual Training

  • Minimum 15 hours of flight time including a minimum of 2 hours cross-country experience.

Solo Training

  • Minimum 5 hours.

The remaining time will be made up as required in either Dual or Solo.

These are minimum training requirements as outlined by Transport Canada. Individuals may in some cases exceed these requirements before being recommended for a flight test.

Courses are set up around your schedule - if you can only fly once a week or on weekends we will accommodate your needs. However, for best results we recommend at least two flights per week.

Flight experience from a Recreational Pilot course will count towards a Private Pilot License.
