VFR Over The Top

The VFR (Visual Flight Rules) Over the Top rating allows you to fly to your destination if the weather along your route of travel is below VFR limits, with certain restrictions. At our convenient Collingwood, Owen Sound, Midland, and Simcoe locations, we'll teach you how to navigate above a cloud cover and get to your destination safely.

The minimum to obtain this rating is a Private Pilot's License. The training is broken down into ground and flight training.

Ground School

The ground school for the VFR Over the Top is a minimum of 25 hours and covers the following:

  • Knowledge, experience & skill requirement
  • Training aircraft requirements
  • Visual Flight Rules
  • Aircraft equipment requirements
  • Pilot decision making
  • Review of the following:
  • Airspace classification
  • Aviation weather reports
  • Instrument flying techniques
  • Operation, use, limitations, errors of various aids to navigation (ADF, VOR, GPS)

Flight Training

The minimum training time is 15 hours in the aircraft.

Dual Training

  • 15 hours of instrument flying.

These are minimum training requirements as outlined by Transport Canada. Individuals may, in some cases, exceed these requirements before being recommended for a flight test.

Courses are set up around your schedule - if you can only fly once a week or on weekends we will accommodate your needs. However, for best results we recommend at least two flights per week.
